Everyone wants to be on podcasts in 2025.
But not everyone knows how to actually be a great guest.
I’ve worked with entrepreneurs who thought they were ready.
Then they sat behind the mic and realised… oh, this is harder than I thought.
That’s because podcast guesting isn’t just about talking.
When you’re a guest, it comes down to making an impact.
The kind that sticks with people long after the episode ends.
Here are 5 lessons I’ve learned from coaching guests.
No fluff. No vague advice. Just real, practical takeaways that actually help:
1. A podcast is a conversation.
The best guests don’t treat podcasts like a TED Talk or a sales pitch.
They listen, engage, and build on what the host says.
Think of it like a dinner party.
You don’t just monologue for 45 minutes while everyone else zones out.
(Unless, of course, your goal is to become the human equivalent of elevator music).
You bounce off the energy in the room.
That’s how you keep listeners hooked.
2. If you can’t tell a great story, you will be forgotten.
Your job isn’t just to share information, it’s to make people care.
The best way to do that? Stories.
Instead of saying: “I grew my business by 300%.”
Say: “I remember sitting at my desk, realising I was about to go broke. That’s when I made the decision that changed everything.”
Stories create connections.
Connection builds trust.
And trust is the whole point.
3. Be specific. No one remembers vague advice.
If people can’t apply what you’re saying, they won’t remember it.
Great guests share actionable, concrete takeaways that listeners can use today.
Bad guests say things like: “You just have to believe in yourself and take action.”
Great guests say:
Use the 5 minute rule. If it takes less than 5 minutes, do it immediately.
When networking, always send a 20 second voice note instead of a text.
Etc
It gets 3X the responses.
See the difference? One gets nods. The other gets saved and shared.
4. The podcast isn’t where the impact ends.
Most guests record the episode, post once, and move on.
But the best ones? They turn it into months of content.
They pull 2 to 3 key soundbites and turn them into LinkedIn posts.
They clip a 30 second highlight for Instagram and TikTok.
They repurpose information into an email to their list.
A single podcast can fuel your entire content strategy, if you use it right.
5. The best guests aren’t just heard, they’re invited back.
Want to be the guest hosts love having on?
Make their job easy.
Bring energy.
Deliver information in a way that’s engaging and fun.
Because when you make the host look good, you get invited back.
And when you do it right? That one podcast appearance can turn into collaborations and lifelong connections.
So, next time you land a podcast spot, ask yourself:
Am I showing up just to talk?
Or am I showing up to be remembered?
