2 months ago, I was in Denmark, in the middle of what felt like a wildlife conference for exceptionally hungry deer.

There I was, armed with nothing but a bag of carrots, quickly becoming the most popular human in the park.

As you can see from the photo below, I was desperately trying to fend off a herd of deer.

All while my partner was trying to snap a decent selfie.

It was like a real-life metaphor for my LinkedIn feed: me, trying to make meaningful connections while everyone else just wants a quick snack.

Speaking of LinkedIn, here’s a truth bomb I dropped last week: Racking up likes won’t fatten your bank account.

Shocking, I know!

It seems everyone’s hooked on the like-chasing game.

Want a ton of likes?

Easy peasy. Just:

  • Share a wildly unpopular opinion.

  • Stretch the truth about your “amazing results.”

  • Or hey, why not post a crying selfie? (Pro tip: extra points for dramatic lighting)

You’ll snag loads of likes, but clients? That’s a whole other story.

To really make LinkedIn work for you, you need to go deep, not just wide.

Here’s how:

1. Position yourself as an expert: No, not an influencer. An expert.

Carve out a niche and position yourself as the go-to person in your field. This isn’t about broadcasting but about engaging meaningfully with your audience.

2. Understand your audience: Dive deep into what your potential clients actually need.

What are their pain points? What keeps them up at night? The more you know, the better you can tailor your content to address their specific issues, transforming your posts from nice-to-have to must-reads.

3. Craft targeted content: Every post should speak DIRECTLY to the needs of your audience.

Forget vague and generic - get specific, get personal. Share stories and solutions that resonate deeply with their professional challenges and aspirations.

Likes are nice, but let’s be real - I’m here, and you’re here to build a thriving business.

It's not just about gathering a crowd.

It's about gathering the RIGHT crowd to create a lead-generating machine.

Take action: Think about your last few posts. Did they attract any potential clients or collaborators? Or were they just 'like' magnets?
