When I first landed in Dubai, everyone told me the same thing:

“Go to the in person networking events. That’s where the deals happen.”

So I did.

Week after week I was dropping $60, sometimes $100, to stand in a room full of strangers with name tags, fake smiles, and way too much cologne.

I collected business cards like a kid collecting football stickers.

Left pocket = follow up.
Right pocket = bin when I get home.

I’d come home, tell Antonia about the amazing connections I’d made. But deep down I knew nothing had really happened.

Because no one was actually listening.
