Power to the people who say ‘no’
I’m all for saying ‘yes’ to every opportunity that comes my way. You never know who you’re going to meet or what could turn out. However, understanding that your energy is really your only asset is crucial and the people that strategically guard their time are the ones we should be watching.
So many people will ask for a coffee chat or ‘how did you learn that?’ or ‘can you just give me guidance on this’ and its draining and sapping of your value.
As an entrepreneur, safeguarding your energy from takers is paramount to your success and well-being. Your energy is a finite resource, essential for creativity, productivity, and resilience in navigating the challenges of business ownership. Takers, individuals who consistently drain your energy without reciprocation or regard for your needs, can impede your progress and hinder your ability to thrive.
Set some boundaries this week. Understand that you have value and when someone takes away your time, it better have an ROI on either your business or your mood.
Action to take: say no to something you don’t want to do and do it without reason. (This is hard, so so hard)
If someone says, can I just pick your brain over coffee, (as an example in Dubai), just say ‘no, thanks’. You don’t need to explain, or be rude, just use your boundaries to protect the mission you are on from distractions.
Becoming Steve Jobs - Brent Schlender, Rick Tetzeli
There are a few books about Steve Jobs life, but to me, this is the best one. Written by a journalist, turned friend of Steve’s throughout his life where he was one of Steve’s closest confidants.
Great book on product development, leadership and the relentless pursuit of change.
Question: What are your top tactics for focus when you are running your agency, podcast and newsletter?
Answer: This is a great question and it changes quite frequently. Right now, I use binaural beats to focus deeply with noise cancelling Airpods and everything else around me on ‘do not disturb’. However, to allow this to work I have to ensure my time is organised, my work is ordered strategically for the day and my exercise/food are planned ahead, otherwise the mind begins to wonder.
