Tell me a story, but not like your dads!

Tell me a story, but not like your dads!

I was at an event recently,

It was full of entrepreneurs excited to share their businesses accolades

But as I was driving home I realised I couldn’t remember a single persons name.

In fact, my left pocket was full of business cards and my right pocket was empty.

That’s a bit of an insight into how I organise business cards based on if I want to reach out to them again in the future.

People came up to me at the event and of course I asked for their names, but immediately they went into the exact services their businesses offer.

So, I had no time to programme the face to the name before I was being told about how this incredible service would change the world.

When I moved on, I had no name, no interesting insight, just facts about what these people could do.

I see this all the time both in person and online.

Even when people get up on stage or do an elevator pitch, they go straight into what they can offer and ultimately, it’s almost never unique.

So, without seeing the reviews, testimonials or actual results, how will I ever get my brain to remember you?

It’s a game of attention,

Tell me some stories about you and how your business came about, be personable, give me some background, relate to me!

This goes for online content too - knowing who your audience is will be a game changer in story telling results.

Becoming a story telling master is a cheat code because it grabs attention,

But, don’t misunderstand, it has to show authority.

Your dad is probably like mine, loves to tell a story

He’s got millions of them,

They show experience, they’re fun (most of the time) and they let others know he’s a good guy, but they don’t show authority in one specific area.

They don’t need to, he’s retired!

But for most of us, we need to show we can get you a result, by story telling our experience and results, in a way that’s personable.

If you can tell a story well, in multiple formats, with targeted intent, you’ll never struggle to sell again.

Cool stuff this week

💡 Tesla have put an enormous amount of effort into the marketing of their long awaited Cyber Truck! If you haven’t see this thing, it’s wild. This week they’ve pitted it against Lamborghini’s, tractors, Porsche’s, anything they can to prove its the best at what it does. Here’s the highest trending review and one of those crazy tests. What can we learn? Be prolific when you want to build your market tension.

💡 Everyone knows about AI, Chat GPT, maybe you’ve even upgraded to GPT 4, but have you heard of Google Gemini? This is Google’s response, one year on from OpenAI’s market surge. This is genuinely a product that could rival Musk’s dominance in the AI industry and it seems to take a step forward from what we’ve currently got - have a look here.

💡We may as well continue with the unintentional Elon Musk theme this week by mentioning X (Twitter). If you haven’t read ‘The Ride of a Lifetime’ by Bob Iger, the Disney CEO, I highly recommend it as a business book. Anyway, the Disney CEO has threatened to pull all Disney advertising spend from X after Musk showed support to a Tweet that was anti-Semitic. Musk responded on stage at the NYC Dealbook summit, telling the world he wouldn’t be blackmailed. It’s interesting, because whilst X is a primarily supported by advertising spend, Musk doesn’t seem worried about one of the largest contributors, pulling their support. Does he overestimate the power of his audience and platform?
